From Carl Henderson's "Top 300" Comics Sales Estimates website (http://j_carl_henderson.tripod.com/), which records comic sales each month. This is from the Sept. 2001 record:

"Marvel's heavily-promoted TPB initiative saw fairly dismal results this month,
with the X-FORCE NEW BEGININGS TPB only seeing initial orders of a little over
3,000 copies. A re-issue of SPIDER-MAN VISIONARIES TODD MCFARLANE and the new
SENTRY TPB didn't do much better for Marvel, selling only 2,860 and 2,770 copies
respectively. Surprisingly, retailers didn't seem to even have much confidence
in Joe Casey's UNCANNY X-MEN; the first collection, POPTOPIA, only sold 2,740
    copies."

"Interesting enough, initial orders for Terry Moore's latest STRANGERS IN
PARADISE TPB (3,090 copies) beat out ALL of the new Marvel TPB releases for
September. The silver lining for Marvel is--unlike their comics--their TPBs are
printed to sell in bookstores, and to sell over a couple of years. I only hope
that financial pressures will allow Marvel management to take a long-term view."

Very interesting. biggrin Hey, SiP is the only comic so far where I buy both the tpb and the monthly issues.

neat. so i'm not the only fool dishing out extra money for stuff i already have and the special little bonuses in each.

good for terry. this would make a really cheesy hollywood flick, "one man and his pencil against a giant corporation and they're bottomless piggy bank." the evil ceo could be called madam businesswoman with her band of stockholding flying monkies.

This is great news and excellent portent for the glorious future for indy comics in bookstores!!

or, as the "mainstream" comics media(and the regular mainstream press) would call it,"Another giant crash for the entire comicbook industry, rivalling the end of the speculation boom in 1994! Poor, poor Marvel." rolleyes

(the controversy over #43, contained in the tpb, certainly helped!)

Hurray! Congratulations to Terry. Say, has anyone taken a ruler to the shelf of S.i.P. t.p.b.s? I'll bet it's close to the width of the Sandman shelf. My local Border's sells Sandman, Cerebus, and A Distant Soil t.p.b.s as well as manga. It's time for S.i.P. to show up there as well. One step at a time...
